Woman Pleads Guilty in Indianapolis Fatal Accident

June 22, 2011 - Indianapolis, Ind. - The driver who fled the scene after fatally hitting a police officer accepted a plea deal on Monday. According to a report from IndyStar, the driver pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a fatal accident, which is a felony charge that carries a lengthy prison term of up to 8 years.

The charges stem from a car accident on Sept. 30, 2010. Prosecutors say the driver, a 62-year-old woman from Indianapolis, hit a police officer on a bicycle, shortly after midnight on U.S. 40, near Knightstown. She fled the scene but contacted an attorney later, who advised her to turn herself in. The officer, a 32-year-old with the Greenfield Police Department, was killed in the accident.

A defense attorney argued that pedestrians are difficult to see on that particular stretch of road. Her sentencing is scheduled for August, but it's believed that she'll be sentenced to 2 years of home confinement. Her driver's license will also be suspended for 6 months. The victim's family supported the plea deal.
