Winter Storm Leads to Multiple Indiana Crashes, 4 Law Enforcement Injuries

Posted on Feb 03, 2011

February 3, 2011 - Shelby, Wayne & Tippecanoe Counties - While travel advisory warnings were issued across much of Indianapolis and its neighboring counties, some motorists did not heed the warnings. As a result, 4 Indiana law enforcement officers were injured throughout the course of their workday on February 2. All officers were struck while investigating or working multiple Indiana crashes.

According to an article from Indy Channel News 6, the first of the multiple Indiana crashes occurred in Shelby County on I-74, in which an Indiana State Trooper was struck. Further northwest, another trooper was struck by a tractor trailer along a stretch of I-65 in Tippecanoe County. He was trying to get cars to slow down as they approached the scene of yet another wreck.

According to police, 1st Sgt. Tom McKee was in his unmarked car around 11:30 a.m. when an approaching truck jackknifed and veered to the left shoulder, causing McKee's car to spin into the median. The truck driver then pulled back onto the right side of the roadway and drove away. McKee was taken to University Health Arnett in Lafayette and was treated for minor injuries.

That same morning, around 10:30 a.m., along the 150 mile marker of I-70, Wayne County Deputy Christopher Blackwell was hit by a box truck as he investigated the site of another crash. The truck driver, 22-year-old Terrill L. Jones, had attempted to avoid hitting a truck from an earlier crash but instead veered into Blackwell. As a result, Blackwell was taken to Reid Memorial Hospital where he was listed in serious condition.

When extreme winter weather shuts down major roadways, many travelers cancel their plans and stay close to home. Truck drivers, however, still have deadlines to meet and deliveries to make. When trucking companies are negligent in the driving schedules of their drivers, and fail to take into consideration other roadway hazards, they may be liable for an accident in addition to a driver. When you have been injured in a truck accident in Indiana, it's best to discuss the circumstances of your situation with an Indianapolis truck accident lawyer.
