Train Crashes Into Car in West Indianapolis

June 16, 2011 - Indianapolis, Ind. - According to a report at Fox 59, 4 people suffered personal injuries on Saturday, around 3:30 p.m., when the car they were riding in was hit by a train on the Westside of Indianapolis.

Police are still investigating this serious train accident, but initial reports indicate that the car was attempting to cross the railroad tracks on Lynhurst Drive when it was hit by a cargo train. First responders shut down the street between Rockville Road and Washington Street as they tended to the injured and cleared the wreckage.

Pictures from the scene show a light blue sedan with significant rear- and front-end damage. It appears that the car was hit by the train on its back end, which caused the car to crash into a nearby utility pole.

The victims were transported to local hospitals, although police have not disclosed the nature of their injuries or their current conditions. The identities of those injured in the accident have not yet been released. Authorities will be trying to determine how the accident occurred; however, it does not appear that the intersection has safety gates or lights.
