Teen Brothers Recovering After Indianapolis Crash Slices Car in Half

Posted on Mar 11, 2011

March 8, 2011 - Indianapolis, Ind. - A severe car accident on Feb. 25 critically injured two brothers who were on their way home from school, according to an IndyStar.com report.

The teenagers, Brian Elliott, 18, and Zachary Elliott, 15, were transported to Wishard Memorial Hospital, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. The force of the accident cut the teens' vehicle in half.

The accident occurred on West Epler Avenue in the 500 block near Bluff Road on the south side of Indianapolis. Zachary was pinned in the Honda Prelude for about two hours before rescuers were able to free him from the wreckage.

The siblings were headed home from Perry Meridian High shortly before 12:30 p.m. Students had been released early because of a power outage. Brian and Zachary were westbound on Epler when Brian lost control of the car and slammed into a telephone pole.

According to an MSNBC.com report, Brian had been speeding in the car he had just bought the day before. An eyewitness to the crash told police that the brothers may have been racing another car, but investigators were not able to confirm that street racing led to the accident.

Brian was released from the hospital in the evening of Feb. 25. The hospital did not provide updates on Zachary's condition.

According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were a total of 1,122 vehicles involved in fatal accidents in Indiana in 2008. Of those vehicles, 128 were large trucks, such as semi-trucks and tractor trailers. That represents 11.4% of the total fatal crash vehicles in Indiana and 3.1% of fatal truck crashes in the United States.
