February 10, 2011 - Children are not immune from experiencing debilitating conditions that may qualify them for Social Security disability benefits. Chronic and serious illnesses such as cancer can also afflict children, and if you're the parent of a child with cancer, it's important to know your rights for financial assistance.
According to a news release from prnewswire.com, children with an aggressive and often fatal form of cancer known as neuroblastoma may soon be able to undergo a new treatment, which centers around blocking a specific protein known as cell checkpoint kinase 1 (CHK1).
Finding a treatment for childhood neuroblastoma is noteworthy, because while the cancer accounts for only 7% of childhood cancer cases, it accounts for 15% of all childhood cancer deaths. It typically appears as a tumor in the chest or abdomen and in serious cases, can return with a vengeance after initial treatments.
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia discovered that the depletion of CHK1 helped lead to the death of neuroblastoma cells. CHK1 actually allows neuroblastoma cells to repair and regrow after chemotherapy, so treatment would focus on inhibiting CHK1 cells. This in turn would strengthen the effects of chemotherapy and weaken the effects of neuroblastoma cells. Clinical trials of the treatment are expected to begin over the next few years.
When your child has been diagnosed with cancer such as neuroblastoma, you may qualify for federal programs such as Social Security disability benefits. To get a better idea of how to apply for benefits, you'll want to meet with an Indianapolis Social Security disability lawyer.
