January 10, 2011 - Hamilton County, IN - Speeding may have contributed to a fatal car accident that killed a Purdue University student and injured a passenger.
WISH TV 8 reported that Nicholas Ozolins, 19, was driving his friend Ryan Gushlak's 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer just before midnight on December 29. According to reports, Ozolins was driving at a very high speed when he lost control of the car. At that point, the vehicle crashed into 2 trees and rolled into a field, which was close to 256th Street and Lacey Road in northern Hamilton County.
Ozolins was killed immediately and Gushlak, also 19, and from New York, was taken to Methodist Hospital and is reported to be in good condition. According to reports, Gushlak had just purchased the Mitsubishi that day.
According to numbers from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, deaths such as Ozolins', in which speeding play a factor, are not unique. In 2009, 174 of the state's 693 traffic fatalities were speeding-related.
Hamilton County is not typically associated with the bulk of the state's fatal accidents. In 2009, there were only 18 fatal car accidents, as compared with 56 in Marion County, which had more fatal car accidents than any other county in the state for that year.
