Pregnant Indianapolis Woman Injured in Hit and Run, Baby Delivered

October 12, 2010 - Indianapolis, IN - An Indianapolis mother is recovering with her healthy baby boy after a serious hit and run accident.

Indianapolis News 6 reports that Maria Isabell Benetez-Azateco, 24, was crossing the street at the intersection of Elder Avenue and Maryland Street around 7:30 p.m. on October 11 when she was struck by an eastbound pickup truck. Benetez-Azateco, who was 9 months pregnant, was dragged nearly 100 feet before the driver stopped to pull her out from under the truck. He then drove away.

Emergency crews transported Benetez-Azateco to Wishard Memorial Hospital where doctors performed an emergency cesarean section to deliver her baby boy, who was luckily unharmed in the accident. Benetez-Azateco remains in serious condition as police search for the driver responsible for the hit and run accident.

Indianapolis police are searching for a bald, white male, possibly in his 40s, driving a gray or teal 1994 or ‘95 model GMC truck, potentially a Sierra, with an extended cab. A potential suspect known in Benetez-Azateco's neighborhood was questioned but later cleared by police after the interview.
