October 13, 2010 - Columbus, IN - Police have been investigating a deadly crash in which Anthony Rooker, 48, appeared to be driving more than 100 mph when he lost control of his Mercedes and crashed into a tree.
Reports from WISHTV8 say that witnesses claim the Mercedes was speeding along the road near a football field when it hit a small hill and went airborne for 66 feet. After landing, the vehicle continued another 300 feet before Rooker lost control and rolled the vehicle, sending it slamming into a maple tree on a residential lawn.
The vehicle burst into flames, trapping Rooker and his passenger, Justin Shinolt, 36, inside. Neighbors rushed to the accident scene with garden hoses and tried to extinguish the fire with no success. Emergency crews arrived shortly with fire extinguishers but they also could not extinguish the blaze.
Fire crews arrived and successfully extinguished the fire, but both men were pronounced dead at the scene. Medical examiners are investigating the victims and say toxicology reports will take a month to show if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the reckless driving.
