December 9, 2010 - Indianapolis, IN - A series of car accidents due to an ice patch on I-74 resulted in the death of a Shelbyville woman and injuries to a Good Samaritan who stopped to help. The I-74 car accidents took place on the morning of December 3.
According to reports from Fox59.com, the first car accident occurred when 62-year-old Linda Jean Robbins lost control of her 2004 Ford Explorer on an ice patch on I-74 around 6:30 a.m. while she was traveling west. The vehicle spun out and struck a guardrail, causing Robbins to be ejected from her vehicle near mile marker 93.
Upon discovering the accident scene, Robert Tompkins, 48, and an unnamed second person stopped to help Robbins, who was awake and able to communicate at the time. While trying to offer assistance, another vehicle driven by 22-year-old Kevin Shadday, also lost control and struck both Robbins and Tompkins.
Robbins did not survive her injuries from the second car accident and was pronounced dead at the scene. Tompkins was thrown several feet from the crash site and was taken to Methodist Hospital for the treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and was later released. Police believe an ice patch on I-74 was responsible for both of these car accidents, as well as several others that morning.
