Time magazine reports that a new review finds moderate drinking could potentially lower the risk for Alzheimer's. This debilitating condition can lead to an individual being unable to function on a daily basis or engage in work, which can result in the need for Social Security disability benefits.
After authors analyzed 143 studies that go back as far as 1977 and included 19 different countries, they found that moderate drinkers were 23% less likely to develop symptoms of Alzheimer's, including difficulties with memory. This lowered risk was more significant in 14 out of the 19 countries studied, including the United States.
Moderate drinking for women is considered to be 1 drink per day, while for men, it's 2 drinks per day. Heavy drinking would be having 3 or more drinks per day. As defined in this study, the term "drink" is considered to be 12 oz. of beer, 5 oz. of wine or 1.5 oz. of spirits.
A smaller finding seemed to indicate that wine had a better effect on preventing Alzheimer's than spirits or beer. However, the authors said they didn't have enough data to support that claim completely.
If you've been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and need assistance in applying for disability benefits, then you should speak with an Indianapolis Social Security disability lawyer.
