Man on Scooter Killed in Indianapolis Car Accident

August 4, 2011 - Indianapolis, Ind. - According to the Indy Star, police are withholding the identity of a man who died in an Indianapolis accident, Saturday morning, July 23. The accident happened around 2 a.m. when he pulled his Honda scooter out onto South State Road 37.

According to a report issued by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), the accident took place at the intersection of State Road 37 and West Edgewood Avenue. Indianapolis resident Cassandra Orton, 21 was driving northbound on State Road 37 lane when the scooter turned onto the road from Edgewood to head north.

According to accident investigators, he pulled in front of Orton's Civic and was hit from behind. A large metal sign that he was carrying on his scooter may have prevented him from seeing oncoming traffic, police have suggested.

Orton was treated for hand injuries at Wishard Memorial Hospital. IMPD does not believe alcohol was a factor.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that on average, 37,261 people are killed in traffic accidents annually. Although the lowest it has been since 1961, fatal collisions still pose a significant risk to the public in Indiana and across the nation.
