Indianapolis Police Officer Injured in Crash on East 91st Street

May 2, 2011 - Indianapolis, Ind. - An officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department suffered personal injuries on Saturday when his patrol car crashed on the Northeast side of the city.

According to a report at the Indianapolis Star, the officer was responding to a call when the accident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Investigators say the officer was on his way to assist another officer who was having trouble apprehending a suspect. As he drove down East 91^st Street with his emergency sirens activated, the officer swerved to avoid an SUV that tried to merge into his lane.

The officer then lost control of the squad car, which crashed into a fence in the 6700 block of East 91^st Street. The officer, who has been with the police department since July 2009, was injured and transported by ambulance to Methodist Hospital. His condition has stabilized, and he is expected to make a full recovery.

The driver of the SUV has not been identified. Police say the driver left the scene without stopping or waiting for police officers to arrive. Although there was no collision between the two vehicles, the department is asking for the driver to come forward. The investigation is ongoing.
