Indiana Consumer Warning: Fuel Tank Straps in Older Model Ford F-150s Raise Concern

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating Ford F-150 pickup trucks after reports that the fuel tank straps may be defective, according to an MSN.com report. There are concerns that the straps, which hold the fuel tank in place, could rust and further break down on the 1997-2001 F-150s.

According to the NHTSA, 2 fires have been linked to the fuel tank straps. Ford stated that one fire was the result of a leaking fuel tank, and NHTSA said the other fire was extinguished before it could cause significant damage.

So far, NHTSA has received 175 complaints, and Ford has received 156. Among all of the complaints, 243 involved the tank dropping or dragging; 95 involved leaking fuel; and there were 9 instances in which sparks erupted when the tank was dragged.

Safety regulators have reason to believe that 2.7 million vehicles may be affected. A recall has not been ordered but may be forthcoming.
