November 20, 2011 - Indianapolis, IN - The state of Indiana has developed a new program to help protect Indiana residents from becoming victims of identity theft.
Fox59.com reported in October that the Identity Theft Protection Toolkit already has a number of Indiana residents enrolled in the information protection initiative. The project, launched by Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller, is aimed at keeping Hoosiers from becoming part of the nearly 9 million cases of identity theft reported annually.
To take advantage of this new program, Indiana residents must go to the free online registration form to create a username and password. Once they have access, they can securely store the contents of their wallets to create a comprehensive profile of important data should their purse or wallet ever be lost or stolen.
The system also works with credit agencies, law enforcement and financial institutions to provide a free credit report and expedited recovery efforts. Another feature of the new program includes education and tips on further steps consumers can take to protect their information from the risk of theft.
Identity theft can be devastating, especially when it comes to Social Security. Your Social Security number is often the key to obtaining credit, establishing accounts, and especially obtaining your disability benefits. If your number becomes compromised due to identity theft, you may face difficulty in applying for benefits in the future.
