Hit-and-Run Driver Pleads Guilty in Indianapolis Crash

June 8, 2011 - Indianapolis, Ind. - The man who seriously injured a pedestrian in a hit and run back in January pleaded guilty in court on Monday. According to a report at WISH TV 8, the driver was facing charges of failing to stop at an injury accident and being a "habitual traffic offender."

This case was in the news earlier this week when the victim expressed outrage that the driver was offered a plea deal in the case. The charges stem from a serious accident on New Year's Day. The victim, a 33-year-old woman, was hit by an SUV after she got out of her car on the shoulder of 16^th Street. The driver of the SUV, a 49-year-old man from Indianapolis, did not stop after the accident. Police arrested him several days after the crash.

The victim suffered severe injuries that required more than a dozen surgeries. Her legs were so mangled that both limbs were amputated above the knee. Authorities say the driver faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, even though he has been arrested at least 6 times for alcohol and traffic violations. The victim believes the punishment does not fit the crime.
