February 1, 2011 - Shelby County, IN - A massive ice storm that swept through the state led to the opening of shelters, activation of the National Guard and the closure of several state roads.
The stretch of I-74 in Shelby County was no exception. According to reports from WISH TV 8, the interstate was shut down on February 1 after a string of serious accidents attributed to icy driving conditions. According to the article, the county was under a travel warning, which limits roadway transportation to emergency vehicles.
Shortly after one accident in which the driver of an SUV lost control of the car on an icy bridge, a trooper arrived to investigate the crash. The trooper was speaking with the SUV's driver and passengers when another vehicle, a black car, lost control and hit the car's occupants.
The trooper received medical attention and was released on site but those from the SUV were taken to area hospitals, where they were listed in critical condition. The condition of the driver of the black vehicle was not mentioned in the article.
According to another article in the IndyStar, 760 snowplows were out and Indiana State Police were cautioning drivers to stay off roadways. Driving in winter conditions presents a number of hazards.
