U.S. Task Force Group Recommends No Prostate Cancer Screening
A: According to CNN Health, the same group (U.S. Preventive Services Task Force), that declared mammograms unnecessary for women in their 40s, is said to soon announce that prostate cancer screening for men is also unnecessary. If you were diagnosed with prostate cancer and have become disabled, then you could qualify to receive Social Security disability benefits.
Sources indicate that the group is recommending prostate cancer screening to a "D" rating, which means there is a moderate to high risk that the screening either has no benefit or the dangers outweigh the benefits. Before making their final recommendation however, they will seek comments from other experts.
The task force is planning to cite studies which demonstrate that prostate cancer screening doesn't reduce the amount of deaths and that it has more dangerous side effects than benefits.
Some of the side effects of a prostrate cancer screening include:
- incontinence;
- impotency; and
- in some cases, complications could lead to death.
However, a spokesman from the Prostate Cancer Foundation has said this type of recommendation is a serious mistake.
