Joey Pendleton, Kentucky's state senator, recently witnessed a horrific car accident on the interstate involving 4 people, 2 who were seriously injured.
Pendleton explained how the driver lost control of the car, resulting in 2 of the victims being ejected -- the driver and the mother of a child who was strapped in a child seat in the backseat.
Failing to wear a seatbelt left the mother fatally injured and the driver in critical condition. The child and the child's grandmother, who was wearing a seatbelt, survived this deadly crash.
When Indiana State Police reviewed the case, officers concluded that the mother could've survived if she had been wearing her seatbelt, and the driver could have sustained less serious injuries by also wearing a seatbelt.
Statistics indicate that 45% of fatal injuries and 50% of major injuries in traffic accidents could be avoided if seatbelts are used.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2009, 305 lives in Indiana were saved because of seatbelts and 50 others could've been saved if a seatbelt had been worn. Wearing a seatbelt is a federal law, and rules vary from state to state. But if you're found not wearing a seatbelt, you'll be fined. Worst of all, you could lose your life.
If you've been involved in a car accident caused by someone else's negligence, speak with an Indianapolis personal injury attorney to learn about filing a claim for your injuries and damages.
